Brooks & Dunn Hint at New Music: “We Have to Stop and Remind Ourselves That We’re Songwriters”

Brooks & Dunn is one of country music’s most successful duos. Their 1991 debut album produced a string of No. 1 singles and set them on the path to dominating country radio and award shows throughout the decade. More recently, they found renewed acclaim with their Reboot albums. The collections saw the duo teaming up with a variety of artists to breathe new life into classics from their catalog. Now, it seems that they’re looking to add new music to their catalog.

Brooks & Dunn will kick off their Neon Moon Tour with David Lee Murphy and Molly Tuttle later this month. However, they’re looking further into the future than their tour. In a recent conversation with People, Ronnie Dunn implied that they’ll be working on new music this year. “We have to stop and remind ourselves that we’re songwriters and we need to play with that a little bit,” he said. “So, we’re going back and forth with some other stuff,” he added.

Modern Artists Inspired Brooks & Dunn to Record Reboot

During an appearance on Audacy’s Rob + Holly, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn revealed that a pair of modern country artists inspired them to record their Reboot albums. “I give Luke Combs and Kacey Musgraves kudos for kind of getting this stirred up a little bit,” Brooks said. The duo saw Musgraves and Combs performing covers of their classic songs, which sparked the idea.

“Luke was doing ‘Brand New Man’ at his show and he just wanted to do it like we did it,” Brooks said. “He liked the song and liked playing it like we did,” he added. This adherence to the original version of the song informed the structure of Reboot. The album saw modern artists including Combs, Lainey Wilson, Morgan Wallen, and others doing faithful covers of Brooks & Dunn songs.

“Kacey, she took real liberties with ‘Neon Moon’ obviously doing her crazy thing on that which we thought was really cool too,” Brooks said. “That was probably the primary catalyst for doing what we did with Reboot II–is what Kacey Musgraves did with ‘Neon Moon,’” Dunn said.
