Before the Academy of Country Music Awards, the ACM hosts a gala hosted by the ACM Lifting Lives organization, which is a part of the awards week. In addition to the charitable aspect of this gala, the other mission of this year’s “Play Something Country” gala was to honor the 25x ACM-winning country music duo, Brooks & Dunn.

The event featured a dinner, a silent auction, and special performances by Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Keith Urban, and country music newcomer Zach Top. All of the performances were certainly great and paid homage to one of, if not the most successful, country music duo of all time. However, the performance that everyone has been raving about was Eric Church’s cover of Brooks & Dunn’s “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone.”

Released in 1995, “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” was featured on the duo’s third studio record, Waitin’ On Sundown. Following its release, the single became a classic, as it peaked at No. 1 Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Furthermore, the single helped Brooks & Dunn’s album peak at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
Also, a fun fact about this track is that it is the duo’s third single in which Kix Brooks sings lead vocals. Regardless, Eric Church is keeping this song alive and well, and he did so with his beautiful acoustic rendition at the ACM “Play Something Country” gala.
Church performed the single in the simplest of ways, as it was just him and his gorgeous Gibson guitar. Which starkly contrasts with Church’s recent ambitiously beautiful gospel album, Evangeline vs. The Machine. Eric Church proves once again that it takes a little to make a lot.
Eric Church did not receive any ACM nominations this year. Nonetheless, he will surely be in attendance to support all of his fellow country musicians. He might be a superstar country musician, but at the end of the day, he’s just a stand-up guy. To watch the ACM Awards, tune into Amazon Prime at 8:00 pm EST tonight.
