In a recent interview with NME, Sex Pistols’ bassist Glen Matlock talked about everything from the future of punk to the controversial political beliefs of John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten) to his thoughts of recently-reunited Britpop rockers Oasis. In good Matlock fashion, the interview was a very direct one. Few members of the Sex Pistols have been known to mince their words or hold back.

In the interview, the 68-year-old legendary punk rock bassist discussed his new album Consequences Coming and its allusion to corrupt politicians getting what they deserve. Naturally, the conversation moved toward his feelings about former Sex Pistols vocalist John Lydon’s controversial political beliefs and pro-Trump stance.
“Way back when, there was something about John that I didn’t get on with because I couldn’t quite put my finger on it,” said Matlock. “And him coming out with that kind of encapsulates the whole thing, really. John was fantastic back then. He wrote some great lyrics, but did he really mean ‘em? Ah, that’s the thing. I never found him that sincere.”
Politics aside, the interview was a nostalgic one. Glen Matlock reflected on his friendship with some members of the Sex Pistols, working with Blondie, and his thoughts on Oasis’ music.
“I’ve always seen Oasis as a bit Status Quo,” Matlock said when asked about Oasis’ upcoming reunion. “[With Quo], to hear one song once was enough. It’s a bit like that with Oasis: to hear one song once is enough. I just find them kind of samey.”
He went on to say that he needed to be “careful” about what he says about the “Wonderwall” hitmakers, considering he bumps into Noel Gallagher regularly.
“I think Liam [Gallagher] is fantastic,” Matlock continued. “He sings great. He’s like Johnny Rotten but can carry a tune. He’s got a magnetic stage personality… he can just stand there and it’s riveting. The rest of the guys? No. I think they’re boring live. I’d never go to see ‘em.”
What Has Glen Matlock Been Up To In Recent Years?
Matlock is currently on tour in the UK to promote his solo album Consequences Coming. Matlock also recently contributed to Blondie’s upcoming album, which has yet to be titled or given a release date. However, fans expect the album to be released in 2025.
Matlock also performed with Blondie at Glastonbury Festival this year. He was also part of the Sex Pistols’ recent UK-wide reunion tour, which also featured Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Frank Carter in lieu of the estranged Lydon.
