For my money, Tyler Childers is one of the finest songwriters of this generation. Like many fans, I find it hard to pick a favorite song from his deep discography. Again, like many others, “Shake the Frost” is on the shortlist of songs competing for the top spot in my mind. The people who attended Marcus King’s recent show in Milan, Italy got to hear a snippet of a new soulful rendition of the song. Fortunately for the rest of us, King shared it with his fans and followers on social media.

“Shake the Frost” is one of those Childers songs that several folks have covered to varying degrees of success. So far, no one has matched the quality of the original. That’s a hill I would have died on until yesterday (October 22) when King shared a snippet of his rendition of the tune. Now, I may be re-evaluating my position. Check it out below.
“Ol’ Tyler Childers sure knows how to write ‘em,” King wrote in the post’s caption. “An honor to sing a little of this one with the fine folks of Milan,” he added.
This Isn’t the First Time Marcus King Has Covered the Tyler Childers Fan Favorite
Marcus King has had “Shake the Frost” in his catalog for quite a while. For instance, he performed the Tyler Childers-penned tune during his set at Railbird and has been working it into his setlists on his current tour. However, the rendition he performed in Milan was different.
In previous performances, King did fairly straightforward covers of the song. His voice and Childers’ are a great match. So, the combination made for a rock-solid cover of a great song. However, while in Milan, King wasn’t quite as reserved. This led to one of the most soulful renditions of the song I think I’ve ever heard.
Somehow, “Shake the Frost” never made it onto one of Childers’ studio albums. Instead, he included it on Live at Red Barn Radio I & II. Like many fans, I keep hoping that he and the Food Stamps will record a studio version. However, that may never happen. Now, after hearing a snippet of King’s soulful take on the song, I’m left hoping that he’ll decide to include it in a future release.
