In the video, Simpson is seen drinking a dark liquid, which she called a “Chinese herb thing,” at the behest of her vocal coach.

Upon Googling the ingredients of the beverage, Simpson discovered it contained “snake sperm.” As for what it tastes like, Simpson said, “It’s like a honey.”

“If you want a good vocal, you got to drink snake sperm,” she advised.

Jessica Simpson’s Return to Music

It seems the snake sperm worked its magic, as Simpson’s vocals sounded as good as ever on her recent EP. Upon Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1‘s release, Simpson took to Instagram to reflect on the project.

“I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free. His eyes are on the sparrow and I know He watches me,” she wrote. “God told me I needed to feel the fear and do it anyway as I’m moving into my truth while embracing the beauty of uncertainty. And so I did.”

Simpson added the release “is the result of learning to hear my heart again, free from industry expectations.”

“It’s about surrendering, letting my voice be my main guide, and trusting the journey ahead,” she wrote. “Always inviting God into the room where music creates itself, with a voice that communicates on a spiritual level of grace without fear and allowing the music to be my main voice.”

As for her hopes for the EP, Simpson wrote that she wants “everyone that is meant to catch the vibes [to] wrap their heart and soul around it just like I have within their own journey.”

“This project has kept me awake inside of my dreams,” Simpson concluded. “It doesn’t get better than this moment right here, right now, sharing this creative intuition with y’all.”

Working on the album, Simpson told People, allowed her step away from expectations and into her own skin.

“Probably through all of Nashville Canyon, I came in with: forget who they told you to be. That was the manufactured version of myself,” she said. “Remember the person that opened her mouth and sang Amazing Grace for the first time. Remember that girl and remember that as a woman—and to have freedom in music, that’s what you’re going to hear in Nashville Canyon.”
