Macklemore continues to surprise the public after he both clarified and reinforced the polarizing comments he made at the Palestine Will Live Forever charity concert in Seattle over the weekend. While on stage the “Thrift Shop” singer passionately belted out, “F— America.” Now, Macklemore isn’t the only one to denounce his home country as of recent. However, he is one of the only ones to publicly articulate both his sincerest apologies and his honest conviction.

The means in which Macklemore utilized to do so was in a nine-page Instagram post. The contents of the post were wide-spreading and seemingly aimed to further support his point, as well as debunk any misconceptions about the comment. Both sincere and expansive, Macklemore reportedly aimed to do more good than bad with the post. However, it’s now in the hands of the American public to decide.
Macklemore’s Nine-Page Post
Macklemore’s initial comments and post all revolve around his disenchantment with the U.S. government’s handling of the Israel and Palestine conflict. Mainly, Macklemore clarified the following about his divisive comment. He wrote in his post, “Do not misconstrue the word ‘f—’ for the word ‘hate’” and “It’s different to be angry than to disown.”
In addition to clarifying the connotation, Macklemore repeatedly stated, “I don’t think I’m alone.” He’s not alone, and he made that very clear by rhetorically placing the phrase as the last line in seven of the nine pages. Furthermore, Macklemore acknowledged how his comments came across as brash. Stating, “My pain and emotion at times has felt uncontrollable.”
However, on the last page of the post, he also acknowledged how this will likely happen again. As Macklemore wrote, “I’ve slipped in front of the world before. I’m sure I’ll do it again” and “They will not silence my voice, and they will not close my heart.”
Using His Platform
Of course, something of this nature will always receive criticism and praise. That being so, the comments on the post-show exactly that. Nevertheless, Macklemore’s comments, no matter how vulgar they might have been, are just part of the game.
