Megan Moroney Gives Huge Update on Her Next Album—and It Might Be Here Before You Know It

In 2019, Megan Moroney drove to Nashville from Athens, Georgia, to play “a drunk girl at the bar” in the music video for Luke Combs’ rowdy hit “Beer Never Broke My Heart.” Six years later, that unpaid extra is currently setting Nashville on fire. Moroney, 27, won over fans with her conversational lyrics and uniquely raspy voice on her first two albums, Lucky and Am I Okay? Now, fans are clamoring to see what their favorite “emo cowgirl” has up her sleeve next. And according to Moroney herself, they may get that opportunity sooner rather than later.

“I’m always writing. I mean, I would say that my next album is probably like 80 percent written,” she told People on the red carpet at the American Music Awards on Monday (May 26.)

Megan Moroney Talks “Painfully Honest” Songwriting

Coming by the “emo cowgirl” moniker honestly, Megan Moroney’s catalog is full of cleverly worded songs teeming with real, raw emotion. In fact, the Douglasville, Georgia native received her first guitar from her dad as a pick-me-up after a heartbreak that felt “like you’re falling off of a cliff.”

Indeed, this anecdote set the stage nicely for someone who makes a living writing unflinchingly and unapologetically about their feelings. “There’s definitely strength in being painfully honest, even if it’s hard to talk about whatever it is,” Moroney told People. “And I feel like I’ve got a fan base of younger girls that really look up to me. So if I can be the one that tells them it’s going to be okay, or I once felt this way and now I don’t — I think it’s brave, and I don’t feel weaker for it.”

Perhaps fans shouldn’t begin stockpiling tissues just yet, however. The “Tennessee Orange” songstress has hinted at a more “light and carefree and happy” tone for her third album.

“I would say I’ve still got the emo cowgirl staples on there because it wouldn’t be a Megan Moroney album without some heart-wrenching thing, but I do think it’s lighter and it’s really fun,” she said.

“I’ve got so many songs on my phone right now that I’m just like…” Moroney adopts a stereotypical evil laugh. “I know my fans are just going to freak out.”
