Metallica Teams with Apple to Create an Immersive Concert Experience

Iconic thrash metal band Metallica have never been afraid to try new things. Their output in the ’90s, collaborations with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and the album with Lou Reed are just a few examples of their desire to test the limits. Now, they plan to step into virtual reality with a new Apple-exclusive concert experience.

More About the Metallica Apple Immersive Experience

Metallica’s latest venture marks a new age of immersive technology. It uses ultra-high-definition 180-degree video and Apple’s Spatial Audio to transport fans to the final 2024 stop of the band’s M72 Tour in Mexico City. Viewers can choose to take in the performance in a wide-angle view or get into the Snake Pit for a close-up view of the thrash titans.

Apple used 14 of its proprietary Immersive Video cameras to record the video. They employed a combination of fixed cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled dolly systems that moved around the stage as the band performed.

The songs included in the VR concert experience will be a treat for fans, especially those who have never attended a Merallica concert. “Whiplash” appeared on the band’s 1983 debut full-length Kill ‘Em All. It shows that the Bay Area-thrashers can still tap into the speed and intensity that launched their career more than four decades ago. “One” appeared on their 1988 album …And Justice for All. It was the first album without bassist Cliff Burton, marking the beginning of a new era for the band. Finally, “Enter Sandman” from their 1991 self-titled album is, without a doubt, their most popular song. Fueled by the popularity of “Enter Sandman,” the album helped Metallica gain mainstream success.
