Paul Simon Returning from Hearing Issues to Launch His First Tour in Seven Years, Showcasing Latest Album, ‘Seven Psalms’

Paul Simon’s fan likely will celebrate loudly when they hear that the legendary singer/songwriter will be hitting the road again this year on a North American trek dubbed the, um, A Quiet Celebration Tour. This will mark the 83-year-old folk-rock icon’s first tour since 2018, when he wrapped up a supposed farewell trek.

Simon’s A Quiet Celebration Tour will visit intimate venues offering optimal acoustics in consideration of the hearing-loss issues the singer/songwriter has experienced in recent years.

The tour will visit 20 cities in the U.S. and Canada this spring and summer. Paul will play multiple shows at most stops on the trek. The Quiet Celebration Tour kicks off with an April 4-5 stand in New Orleans and runs through a three-show engagement in Seattle scheduled for July 31, August 2, and August 3.

On the new outing, Simon will present a debut live performance of his latest album, Seven Psalms (2023), as well as intimate versions of many of his classic tunes. He also will share stories during the shows.

Simon will be accompanied by a nine-piece band including his longtime guitarist Mark Stewart, with Steve Gadd and Matt Chamberlin alternating on drums. The band also will feature Caleb Burhans (viola), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Gyan Riley (guitar), Mick Rossi (keyboards), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Nancy Stagnita (flute), and Eugene Friesen (cello). In addition, Simon’s wife, Edie Brickell, will be a guest vocalist at the concerts.

More About Seven Psalms and Simon’s Recent Hearing Issues

Simon wrapped his Homeward Bound farewell tour in September 2018. Since then, he’s played occasional other special concerts and events.

A few years ago, Simon began work on Seven Psalms, which was inspired by a dream he had. The reflective project is made up of seven movements intended to be experienced as one long piece of music.

During the making of the album, Simon began losing the hearing in his left ear. The story behind the making of Seven Psalms and Paul’s hearing issues were profiled in the 2024 documentary In Restless Dreams.

Simon’s hearing loss initially made it difficult for him to perform live. Paul eventually worked with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss in California and his own production team to design a stage setup with monitors positioned in a way that allows him perform live again comfortably.

A CBS Mornings segment that aired in November 2024 profiled Simon’s efforts to try to regain his hearing and return to the stage.

Other Recent Simon News

Simon’s most recent new song, a duet with Brickell titled “Bad Dream,” was released on October 31, 2024. The blues-influenced tune is available via digital formats.

This past Sunday, February 16, Simon appeared on the SNL50 special celebrating Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary. Paul teamed up with pop star Sabrina Carpenter for a version of his classic Simon & Garfunkel tune “Homeward Bound.”
