Bruce Springsteen recently debuted the previously unheard archival tune “Faithless,” from his upcoming box set Tracks II: The Lost Albums, and now a companion music video for the song has been posted on his YouTube channel.
Videos by American Songwriter
As previously reported, “Faithless” is the title track of one of seven unreleased archival albums collected in the box set. The Faithless album is described as “long-lost film soundtrack” to a “spiritual Western” movie that was never made
Taking into account that description, the “Faithless” video could be a scene from that nonexistent film. The black-and-white clip begins with footage of Springsteen, wearing a cowboy hat, standing in the desert on a hot day. Bruce pours water on a handkerchief and wipes his sweaty brow and face.
The camera then follows Springsteen as he walks through what appears to be Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. As the video progresses, we see a large cactus with bees hovering near it flowers, and then a closeup of Bruce’s pensive face.
The scene then changes to show a lit candle and then Springsteen inside a wooden shack, as sunlight shines through gaps in the planks that make up the structure’s roof.
Next, we see Bruce, looking contemplative, outside again standing in the desert sun. As the video comes to an end, a shadowy Springsteen, with the sun behind him, walks toward the camera as he leads a horse.
More About the Song “Faithless”
“Faithless” is a delicate acoustic tune featuring folk, country, and gospel influences. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of a man who admits to lacking faith until he finds redemption in a higher power or, perhaps, in the love of a woman.
“Well, I woke by the rocks of the river / Faithless, faithless, faithless, then I met you,” Springsteen sings at the beginning of the song. “I walked ’neath the eaves of the garden / Faithless, faithless, faithless, then I saw you.”
Later on, in the song’s bridge section, Bruce sings, “I reached for the hem of His garment / I stood in the light of the doorway / I saw my face in the waters at the riverside / Faithless, faithless, faithless.”
“Faithless” is the third advance track Springsteen has released from Tracks II box set. The others were “Rain in the River” and “Blind Spot,” which both dates back to the 1990s.
“Faithless” is available now as a digital download and via streaming services.
