Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and singer-songwriter Cheyenne Marie Mize have just released their collaborative album Among the Gold to everyone –- for free! The six-song EP is a collection of 19th Century American parlor music that the duo selected and brought back to life.
Mize speaks of the album as though it simply floated her way: “I had had the idea behind Among the Gold brewing for some time- originally thinking it was going to be me alone- to take some of my favorite very, very old tunes and record them. I offered the idea to Will, needing only a mic and a good room for recording, and he offered me a mic and a good room for recording. I asked him to sing a couple of the songs as duets as well. In the process we very much enjoyed singing together and we decided that they would all make great duets so it became more of a collaborative effort, with him helping me to decide on the rest of the tunes we would record, and helping me with instrumentation and arrangement decisions. And then it was.” And indeed, now here it is for all to enjoy as much as the duo enjoyed the process of creation.
Mize, who hails from Louisville, Kentucky is also releasing her debut album this fall, and will be playing several shows to promote the release (current tour dates are below.) Will Oldham (the man behind the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy moniker, also from Louisville) currently stars in the movie New Jerusalem, and was just featured in the season finale of Squidbillies, alongside Drive-By Truckers, Rhett Miller, Lucinda Williams, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Hayes Carll, and more.
