“Whip My Hair” by Willow (Single, 2010)
Daughter of movie stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, the pop-punk artist Willow has followed in her folks’ footsteps in the entertainment industry. And this song, which hit No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, came out when she was just 10 years old. The track, which boasts a heavy beat, gets stuck in your head thanks to the chorus about Willow shaking her hair back and forth. It’s an incredible feat for someone so young. And on it, Willow offers,
Hop up out the bed turn my swag on
Pay no attention to them haters because we whip ’em off
And we ain’t doing nothing wrong
So don’t tell me nothing, I’m just tryna have fun
So keep the party jumping, so whats up? (yeah)
“Ho Hey” by The Lumineers from The Lumineers (2012)
This sublimely catchy acoustic-driven song by the Americana group The Lumineers is impressive in its simplicity. A chorus of gang vocals over simple strumming can really get to the core of listeners, and The Lumineers rose to fame and popularity thanks to this very reality. This track, which hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, encourages us all to sing along. To get down with the rhythms and just have a good time. On the song, lead vocalist Wesley Schultz offers,
(Ho!) I don’t think you’re right for him
(Hey!) Look at what it might have been if you
(Ho!) took a bus to China Town
(Hey!) I’d be standing on Canal
(Ho!) and Bowery
(Hey!)
(Ho!) And she’d be standing next to me
(Hey!)
“Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man from Woodstock (2017)
This song, which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, has since been used in TV commercials, shows and movies galore. It’s like hot wax, it sticks to you with such ease. Thanks to bouncy rhythms and bright guitars, it surrounds you like a tornado and then seeps into your music-loving soul. It’s just that good. And on it, Portugal. The Man’s lead vocalist John Gourley offers,
Can’t keep my hands to myself
Think I’ll dust ’em off, put ’em back up on the shelf
In case my little baby girl is in need
Am I coming out of left field?
Ooh woo, I’m a rebel just for kicks, now
I been feeling it since 1966, now
Might be over now, but I feel it still
Ooh woo, I’m a rebel just for kicks, now
Let me kick it like it’s 1986, now
Might be over now, but I feel it still
