4 One-Hit Wonders That Have Aged Surprisingly Well

Lots of one-hit wonders havenโ€™t exactly aged well. Either their sound has become outdated, or their lyrics are a bit on the cringey side. It happens. However, some one-hit wonders have actually aged surprisingly well through the years, and plenty of fans (young and old!) still enjoy them today. Letโ€™s take a gander at a few examples, shall we?

1. โ€œFlagpole Sittaโ€ by Harvey Danger

Power pop comes back in style on the regular, but the genreโ€™s heyday was definitely in the mid-to-late 1990s. One of our favorite power pop post-grunge one-hit wonders that aged quite well has to be the 1998 hit โ€œFlagpole Sittaโ€ by Harvey Danger.

This song has an almost 1960s element to it, and that just makes it all the more timeless. Even if you werenโ€™t around when this song hit no. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100, you probably at least know the line โ€œIโ€™m not sick, but Iโ€™m not well.โ€

2. โ€œTeenage Dirtbagโ€ by Wheatus

This one-hit wonder got a breath of new life when it made the rounds on TikTok in 2024. โ€œTeenage Dirtbagโ€ by Wheatus was released in 2000 and is still a pop-rock joy to listen to today. If youโ€™ve ever experienced teenage angst in any capacity, youโ€™ll relate to this absolute bop of a one-hit wonder.

3. โ€œVideo Killed The Radio Starโ€ by The Buggles

Out of all the one-hit wonders that aged well out there, โ€œVideo Killed The Radio Starโ€ by The Buggles has aged well despite being about a very particular time in pop culture. Released in 1979, this new wave hit is all about attitudes toward mid-20th-century technological changes in music, media, and culture.

4. โ€œA Whiter Shade Of Paleโ€ by Procol Harum

This is the oldest song on our list, and itโ€™s a very well-aged psychedelic pop-rock tune for the ages. โ€œA Whiter Shade Of Paleโ€ by Procol Harum was released in 1967 and managed to hit no. 5 on the Hot 100 without much in the way of promotion.

Itโ€™s a classic anthem of the Summer of Love, and is also still considered one of the most commercially successful single tracks in history. Itโ€™s been covered by the likes of Annie Lennox, The Hesitations, and hundreds more.
