Chappell Roan has always been unapologetically herself. According to her astounding public reception, it seems Roan’s personality paired with her music is the very thing that has made her wildly successful. However, the musician herself has an incredibly contrasting opinion. An opinion that completely dulls the glitz and glamour of the music industry.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the 26-year-old did the very thing she believes is hindering her career—Spoke her mind freely. Yes, Chappell Roan believes she would be far more successful if she wasn’t so outspoken. This plight is not unique to Roan, as it is a tale as old as time. However, given that it’s coming from 2024’s most successful musician, it is rather surprising.
Chappell Roan on Speaking Up and Facing Disrespect
In her interview with the BBC, Roan stated, “I’ve been responding that way to disrespect my whole life — but now there are cameras on me, and I also happen to be a pop star, and those things don’t match.” She cleverly added, “It’s like oil and water.”
Even though Roan has received six Grammy nominations this year, she told BBC her career has slowed down immensely. “I think, actually, I’d be more successful if I was okay wearing a muzzle” and “If I were to override more of my basic instincts, where my heart is going, ‘Stop, stop, stop, you’re not okay’, I would be bigger,” stated Chappell Roan. “I would be way bigger … And I would still be on tour right now,” she continued.
Despite her current touring pause, Roan is not worried. The “Pink Pony Club” singer knows opportunity will always be around, thus, she said, “So when someone says, ‘Do this concert because you’ll never get offered that much money ever again’, it’s like, who cares?” “If I don’t feel like doing this right now, there are always options. There is not a scarcity of opportunity. I think about that all the time,” concluded Roan.
As stated previously, Roan’s plight is not one the public is unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, it makes one wonder how different Roan’s career would be if she did curb her opinions. However, fans of Roan, both dedicated and not, hope to see more of her candid and rambunctiously authentic ways for years to come.
