Beyoncé Was Shocked by Best Country Album Win, Then She Took Home First-Ever Album of the Year Award

When Beyoncé won Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter, she allowed herself a split second to be absolutely shocked. She was up against Lainey Wilson, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, and Post Malone, and the award could really have gone any which way. However, Beyoncé’s divisive country album took home the award.

At the end of the night, she also took home her first-ever Album of the Year award after being nominated five times for the coveted honor. Say what you want about Cowboy Carter, but Beyoncé may have been right when she said “genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists.”

Doechii’s Performance Brought the House Down

Fresh off of her Best Rap Album win, Doechii took the Grammy stage by storm with an incredible performance. She’s been upping her game lately after the release of her album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, putting on amazing shows during the album circuit. Doechii earned that Best Rap Album award, and then she proved it with this show-stopping performance. She performed the songs “Denial is a River” and “Catfish” on an elaborate set which included a raised platform and a treadmill-like section of the stage. Doechii is innovative, creative, and dedicated to her craft, and she proves it with every new performance.

Chappell Roan Called For “Livable Wage” From Record Labels

With a new platform from her Best New Artist Grammy Award, Chappell Roan used her speech to urge record labels to give artists a “livable wage and healthcare.” She shared her experiences being signed as a minor, then dropped from her label with next to no safety net. Especially now, with the landscape of the music industry altered by the wildfires, artists are going to be looking for support from all sides. That includes their record labels. Chappell ended with a strong message for record labels: “We got you; do you got us?”

The Music Industry Came Together as a Community in the Wake of L.A. Wildfires

This year’s Grammy Awards were veiled with sorrow and devastation from the wildfires that tore through L.A. However, the music industry came together beautifully at the award show, raising funds for MusiCares, honoring Los Angeles, and celebrating diversity, inclusivity, and strength. There was an air of tragedy that hung over the 67th annual Grammy Awards, but it was not a wholly somber affair. The music industry joined together as a community on Sunday night, supporting each other from the ground up. It was something truly amazing to watch.
