‘American Idol’ Star Mourns “True Pioneer” Killed in Car Wreck

Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, who founded all-girl hip-hop trio The Sequence, died March 1 in a car crash in Montgomery County, Alabama. With a career spanning nearly 50 years and multiple chart hits, the “Funk You Up” singer undoubtedly left her mark on the music industry. American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson recently remembered Angie Stone in a heartfelt social media post.

Jennifer Hudson Leads Tributes to Angie Stone

Taking to social media Friday (March 1,) Jennifer Hudson shared a photo of Angie Stone. The late R&B singer looks stunning in a blue blouse and chunky gold necklace.

“I can’t believe this! What a loss !!!” the EGOT winner wrote. “Angie Stone was a true pioneer. Another one of our great soul singers gone too soon. Prayers up for her family and loved ones!”

Hudson was among several A-listers who took time to remember Angie Stone. “No way I know they say that God doesn’t make any mistakes… but man this one hurts,” wrote Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx. “Angie Stone was an incredible songwriter, and incredible artist an incredible person… never thought in 1 million years that this would happen… Rest In power.”

Beyoncé also shared a personal tribute to Stone on her website, writing, “Thank you for your voice, your strength and your artistry. Your incredible legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, Angie Stone.”

Angie Stone Died in a Car Wreck Following Alabama Performance

According to news reports, Angie Stone was traveling in a van with eight others at about 4:25 a.m. Saturday, March 1, following a Mardi Gras performance in Mobile, Alabama. She and the vehicle’s other occupants were headed to Baltimore, Maryland, for a halftime performance at the CIAA basketball tournament.

Sadly, the van overturned on I-65 about 5 miles south of Montgomery, where it was then hit by a commercial vehicle. While the van’s driver and seven other passengers survived, Stone died at the scene. She was 63 years old.

Known as “Angie B,” Stone founded all-girl rap trio The Sequence at age 16. After scoring a series of hits like “Funk You Up” and “Monster Jam,” she joined the trio Vertical Hold as their lead vocalist.

Later, Stone found success as a solo artist, notching her first No. 1 album with 2007’s The Art of Love & War. She transitioned into acting with the 2002 comedy The Hot Chick, also playing Big Mama Morton in the Broadway hit Chicago.
