The voice behind iconic songs like “Uptown Girl”, “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, and “Piano Man”, Billy Joel spent several decades solidifying himself as one of the top singers and songwriters in the music industry. Selling over 160 million albums, the singer also landed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1999. While showered in accolades over his career, Joel continues to perform. He currently has shows running through 2026. But given his history on and off the stage, it seemed a new documentary coming to HBO looked to give fans a glimpse into the world of Billy Joel.

Expected to air on HBO this Summer, the new documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, will come in two parts. Helmed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the documentary hoped to shine a different light on the music icon. With the majority of his life playing out on stage, the director wanted to incorporate special performances and even home videos into the film.
Although airing on HBO, the documentary will also be available to fans on the streaming service MAX. While announced, the production released no information about when it would air. Still, the film will reveal “an expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel, exploring the love, loss and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting.”

Director Thankful For Billy Joel Giving Them Access To His Life
Discussing the project, Lacy promised to focus on the Joel that many never knew. “For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise. I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset, and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is.”
Outside of her excitement to share the film with fans, Lacy also took a moment to thank Joel for giving such personal access to his life. “We are gratified that Bill trusted us with his story, which we have told as honestly as possible, diving into territory which has not been explored before.” Don’t miss Billy Joe: And So It Goes, airing this Summer on HBO.
