4 of the Most Unexpected Coachella Collaborations

Coachella sets are unlike anything else. Musicians pull out all the stops when they get their chance on that stage, including drumming up some worthwhile collaborations. Sometimes fans can guess who a musician might tap for their Coachella set, while other times it’s completely out of the box. Check out four unexpected Coachella collaborations, below.

Drake and Madonna

Amid Drake’s set at Coachella 2015, Madonna came out to perform two of her hits, “Human Nature” and “Hung Up.” After playing his track named after the pop queen, Madonna herself popped up on stage. Coachella has always been known to produce once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. We can’t see this happening again, but we’re glad we can return to the footage for proof of this unexpected collaboration.

Wouldn’t let me say the words I longed to say
You didn’t want to see life through my eyes
Express yourself don’t repress yourself
You tried to shove me back inside your narrow room
And silence me with bitterness and lies
Express yourself don’t repress yourself

Afrojack and Paul McCartney

Though this isn’t a collaboration per say, it was surprising to see Paul McCartney in Afrojack’s DJ booth at Coachella 2011. McCartney can be seen standing beside Usher, bouncing along to the DJ’s mix. It’s not the first place you’d expect a rock legend, but it’s a great equalizer.

Harry Styles and Shania Twain

Those familiar with Harry Styles’ music taste wouldn’t have been too shocked by his decision to bring Shania Twain on stage for his Coachella performance in 2022. Those not familiar were likely blown away. Styles sported his best country get-up as he collaborated with the legendary artist on two songs. Twain might not have been the first artist that comes to mind when thinking of potential Styles Coachella collaborations, but it was a welcomed surprise.

No inhibitions, make no conditions
Get a little outta line
I ain’t gonna act politically correct
I only wanna have a good time

The best thing about bein’ a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun

Olivia Rodrigo and No Doubt

Olivia Rodrigo has long professed her love of ’90s pop rockers. Her sound is a clear evolution of theirs, and she’s not afraid to wear her inspirations on her sleeve. That being said, we were still very shocked when No Doubt brought out Rodrigo for their Coachella headlining performance in 2024. Rodrigo and Gwen Stefani sang “Bathwater” together in what can be seen as a passing of the baton.

You and your museum of lovers
The precious collection you’ve housed in your covers
My simpleness threatened by my own admission

And the bags are much too heavy
In my insecure condition
My pregnant mind is fat full with envy again
