Stevie Wonder Addresses Theory That His Blindness Was Just an Act: “You Know the Truth”

The internet is a breeding ground for rumors, conspiracy theories, and just plain craziness. And while most theories surrounding Bigfoot, UFOs, and the government, the music industry has a few conspiracies too. While Stevie Wonder is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and musician, who holds 25 Grammy Awards, he was also blind. Not allowing his blindness to hold him back from his dreams, he eventually found himself in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yet, according to some, the singer wasn’t actually blind. Although an outrageous claim, Wonder decided to address the wild rumor at his recent show.

Taking the stage at the Blackweir Fields in Cardiff, Wales, for his Love, Light, and Some UK Tour, the singer entertained thousands of fans. But during one portion of the show, he decided to break his silence about being blind. “I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now. You know there have been rumors about me seeing and all that? But seriously, you know the truth.”

Stevie Wonder Explains How His Blindness Helped Him See World Differently

With the audience laughing over the wild accusations, Wonder continued his speech, explaining how his blindness allowed him to see the world in a different light. “Truth is shortly after my birth I became blind. Now, that was a blessing because it’s allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight.”

Expanding on that statement, Wonder concluded that being blind gave him the gift to “See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what color they are, but what color is their spirit.”

While the rumor will always circulate on the internet, fans put no stock in the idea that Wonder could see. “This rumour is getting old. Stevie doesn’t have time for it, he’s too busy creating the best music to exist on planet Earth.”

Just turning 75 back in May, Wonder continued to tour the world, sharing his love for music with his millions of fans.
