The TV Show That Stevie Nicks Says Reminds Her of the Fleetwood Mac Days
We all have characters and pieces of media that we can relate to our own lives in a way. That’s what makes entertainment so special. For Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks, it’s no different. However, in this case, the TV show she sees herself in actually draws loose inspiration from her personal life, specifically her tumultuous relationship with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

It’s no major secret that Daisy Jones & The Six became available to stream on Prime back in 2023, is inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s complex history as a group.
In an interview with Vulture, Stevie Nicks talked about how the TV show takes her back. She revealed that it’s the relationship between two characters in Daisy Jones that reminds her of how she interacted with her old flame, Lindsey Buckingham, back in the day.
For her, it’s the complicated dynamic between characters Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin, that brings back a certain kind of déjà vu.
“When two people capture the essence of something that reminds you of your life, it’s not like you go, ‘They look just like us’ or ‘They dress just like us,’” Nicks shared. “It’s something else. It’s a certain feeling that they got when they would look at each other after being in an argument, and then they’d start to sing. It would blow your mind. I would be watching and be like, Well, there you go. That’s exactly why we did it.”
Nicks even shared that “it was the back-and-forth between the two of them[Daisy and Billy]” that gave her flashbacks.
“It was so good. It was so real, and it was really so right on.”
The 1997 TV Special That Inspired Taylor Jenkins Reed
Taylor Jenkins Reed originally published the book Daisy Jones & The Six in 2019. A New York Times bestseller, the book eventually sold more than one million copies worldwide. In a published story, Reed talked about how she first became inspired by Fleetwood Mac.
While channel surfing as a teenager in the 90s, Reed came across the band performing some of their old hits on a show called Fleetwood Mac: The Dance. The MTV special celebrated the 20th anniversary of the band’s popular Rumors album, so naturally, the setlist included hits like “Rhiannon”, “Landslide”, and “The Chain”.
It was while watching their performance of “Landslide” that it became obvious to a teenage Reed that Nicks and Buckingham had something special. Whether it was love at the time or not, who can really say?
“As the song was coming to an end, Stevie and Lindsey moved closer to one another, smiling tenderly, maybe even a little bit wistfully,” Reed writes. “Lindsey stopped strumming for a moment and Stevie let it fly as he watched from the sideline. And for one split second—truly, a slice of a moment—Lindsey put his fist under his chin and looked at Stevie as if she was a miracle,” Reed continues, “And I thought ‘Oh, they’re in love with each other.’”
However, despite what you may think, Daisy Jones & The Six actually isn’t a retelling of the Fleetwood Mac story. Reed told The Guardian in 2019, “It’s a Fleetwood Mac vibe, but it’s not their story.”
“I haven’t actually ripped off their lives; I just wanted to spend more time listening to Rumours and needed a good reason to do it.”
