‘A Minecraft Movie’ and Jack Black Needed Just 34 Seconds To Make Music History

In addition to his acting career, Jack Black also has serious vocal chops. Forming the comedy-rock duo Tenacious D in 1994 with Kyle Glass, Black has toured with the likes of Pearl Jam, Weezer, and Beck. Now, the “Peaches” singer has added another accolade to his already varied resume. Black currently holds the title of “shortest song to ever reach the charts in the UK.

Jack Black Makes History in 34 Seconds

This week, Jack Black reached No. 21 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart with “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” his original song from the video game spin-off film A Minecraft Movie.

Clocking in at 34 seconds, the delightfully silly track beat out Jonny Trunk & Wisbey’s 2007 song “The Ladies’ Bras” by two seconds to become the shortest song ever to crack the UK charts.

“Bro jack black is still cooking up fire beats at 55 yrs old and in a Minecraft movie while still being relevant to today’s audience and knowing what we all like,” one YouTube user gushed. “honestly without him, the Minecraft movie would not have worked out at all! So let’s all appreciate how amazing he is as an actor, singer, and a human being!”

In a video message celebrating the song’s viral success, Black said, “I want to send big love to all the Minecraft fans for getting us up there – it’s insane! Love you!”

In A Minecraft Movie, Black plays Steve, a former doorknob salesman who has lived in the Overworld for years and serves as a guide to the other characters. The film also stars Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks.

The Song That Saved ‘School of Rock’

In 2003, Jack Black established himself as a Hollywood Leading Man with his role as rockin’ substitute teacher Dewey Finn in School of Rock. And the Nacho Libre star once revealed how the film’s final song came into existence.

Struggling with writing the song himself, Black decided to scout out the indie scene for inspiration. That’s how he came across New York City garage band The Mooney Suzuki.

“I wrote a bunch of different drafts, and none of it was working. They were so funny and hard-working. I thought ‘I wish I could write a song like that. That’d be perfect,’” Black recalled. “I went backstage at the end of the show and said, ‘I’m doing this movie called School of Rock. You think you could write a song?’ The next day, I got the demo, and said, ‘WE HAVE THE END OF OUR MOVIE’. I may have cried a little bit.”
