American Idol is slowly but surely narrowing down its competitors. At the conclusion of the show’s April 6 episode, 16 people had been sent home. Meanwhile, four artists had been automatically moved to the Top 24. That left 42 singers to compete for the 20 remaining spots.

The first four singers in the Top 24 were revealed to be to Mattie Pruitt, Canaan James Hill, Gabby Simone, and Zaylie Windsor.
Four American Idol Standouts
Mattie, who at 15 is the youngest competitor this season, wowed judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan with her performance of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.”
“She’s probably a massive star,” Luke said. “Like, sneaky star.”
Additionally, Canaan, a platinum ticket holder, earned his ticket through. He did so thanks to his performance of Marvin Sapp’s “Never Would Have Made It.”
After the performance, Luke said Canaan was “one of the best singers I’ve ever seen.” Meanwhile, Lionel praised, “That was the greatest performance I have ever seen.”
Gabby, meanwhile, got a standing ovation from the judges and moved forward in the competition after she expertly sang Nina Simone’s “Four Women.”
Luke was so impressed by Gabby’s performance that he said she “just came roaring to the front of the competition.”
As for Zaylie, her rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” got the judges on their feet and moved her further into the competition.
Carrie declared Idol “the Zaylie show” after the singer’s epic performance. Meanwhile, Luke predicted that she’d make it all the way to the Top 10.
Among the 16 whose journey ended on Sunday night were JMarie, Will Carter, Santina Madden, Isaiah Moore, Samantha Ray, and Jazzy Mae.
Afterwards, the remaining 42 contestants were informed that they’d have to choose a duet partner to sing with for the head-to-head round. That round of the competition will air on American Idol‘s April 7 episode. It will cut the remaining field by more than half to complete the Top 24.
