Drake Reflects on Fruitful Career Ahead of Tour: “Maybe I’m in Some Coma”

Tonight (July 5), Drake and 21 Savage begin their nationwide It’s All a Blur Tour in Chicago. Initially, the tour was meant to begin with shows in Memphis on June 29 and Columbus on July 1, but both of those were postponed to August 6 and October 9 respectively. Nevertheless, ahead of the show Wednesday, Drake decided to share some thoughts with his fans about how far he’s come.

Posting a video monologue to Instagram, Drake first discussed his biggest fear in life, which he said is that his efforts and accomplishments end up being futile.

“Someone asked me the other night what my biggest fear is,” he started off. “And I’ve never really had a good answer for it, but my answer was that all this is for nothing. Kind of the idea that like, one day life ends and it just all goes black. And I guess that question like, sent me, you know, obviously deep into a spiral of thought. And it makes me think about my life and how surreal it feels at times.”

Then, to further emphasize this fear he has, Drake recalled the time he auditioned for the Nickelodeon TV drama Degrassi, which he starred in as a youth. Degrassi helped to skyrocket Drake’s popularity, while also aiding his transition to rapping. But, considering he has not looked back since earning fame, he wonders if this could all truly be “a blur.”

“I go back to this day when I was like, 13 or 14,” he continued. “I had an audition for a TV show that ultimately shaped my life. And before my audition, I went to this kid’s house and I, out of, I guess, a desire to be accepted, I would succumb to peer pressure, and I got high with these kids right before my audition. I kind of wonder if something bad happened that day or, you know, maybe I’m still high, maybe I’m in some coma. And this is just like me playing out my ideal life. And yeah, that concept has stuck with me for a lot of years. I mean, it feels like reality, it feels tangible. But I definitely wonder sometimes.”

This admission by Drake not only gives a perfect explanation for the name of his tour but also depicts the headspace of one of the most popular artists of the 2000s millennium. While on tour with 21 Savage, Drake is also expected to release his fourth studio album since 2020 titled For All the Dogs. So, even though he has a hard time grasping the weight of his lavish life, it seems that the work never ends for the Toronto-raised icon.
