Earlier this month, the Vanderbilt Commodores shocked the world when they beat the Alabama Crimson Tide, the No. 1 college football team in the nation. That night, Vandy students were so proud of their win that they rushed the field and tore down the goalpost. Then, they carried the goalpost through Nashville before throwing it into the Cumberland River. Now, Garth Brooks owns a piece of the post and college football history.

Brooks wasn’t the only person to buy a piece of the goalpost from Vanderbilt. Due to the fans rushing the field, the SEC fined the university $100,000. As a result, they recovered the goalpost from the river, chopped it up, and sold it to fans to commemorate their big win. Brooks decided that he had to have a piece of it to display in his Nashville bar, Friends in Low Places. He talked about his newly acquired artifact in a recent episode of Inside Studio G.
Garth Brooks Buys a Piece of Vanderbilt History
During the episode, Garth Brooks talked about Vanderbilt fans tearing down the goalpost and the fine it caused. “They got fined so bad that they had to cut the goalpost up in pieces and sell the pieces to pay off the fines,” he said. “What they didn’t sell was the pad that was on it. We bought it,” the revealed. “We had to.”
Brooks went on to say that the goalpost pad will be housed in the Sevens Club, an exclusive club on the third floor of Friends in Low Places. It hosts private events as well as Trisha Yearwood’s cooking show. So, not everyone who comes to the bar will be able to see it. However, members of the Vanderbilt football team will likely get to see it. Brooks hopes to see how many of the players he can get to sign the pad.
“What I love about that whole thing was, ‘Shock the world.’ That whole saying was so cool because I love the underdog. Love it when the underdog gets a shot,” he explained.
