Good Spirits and Great Music: Country Legend Battling Multiple Sclerosis Races Randy Travis in His Wheelchair

Randy Travis and Clay Walker decided to have some fun during their recent run in.

The men recently found themselves with some time to kill and a long hallway at their disposal, so they decided to hold a competition—a wheelchair race.

Travis posted a video of the encounter on Instagram. In the clip, Travis and Walker sat in their wheelchairs with a man standing behind each of them. Once the race began, the men took off, running as they pushed the country singers’ wheelchairs.

The race looked neck-and-neck in the video, and it was apparently too close to name a winner. Neither guy seemed to mind, though. They both dissolved into laughter and good natured ribbing at the conclusion of the event.

“When @ClayWalker and I get together…we race!” Travis captioned the clip. “We’ll call it a tie.”

Randy Travis and Clay Walker’s Medical Battles

Travis wound up in a wheelchair after a stroke in 2013, while Walker frequently uses a wheelchair amid his decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Travis’ medical incident left him unable to sing, so, in 2023, he turned to AI to help him record a new song,  “Where That Came From.”

While he used AI for good, Travis has acknowledged the potential problems of the technology. As such, he advocated for the 2025 NO FAKES Act, which works to protect artists from their voices being stolen.

“At this point in my life, I am fully focused on living and giving back,” Travis said back in April. “I’ve been part of the music community my whole life, professionally for 40 years. I am passionate about advocating to keep music an honest pursuit of art and human expression.”

“While I remain excited about new, cutting-edge technologies,” he continued, “we must protect, and fairly compensate, the creative minds that give us the music—and art—that feeds our souls.”

As for Walker, he’s continued to perform amid his health woes, though it’s not always easy. He recently had to cancel a show due to side effects of his MS treatment. While he made it through his next scheduled concert, Walker had to be helped off of the stage when his performance came to an end.
