In the somewhat enigmatic lyrics to “Eternity,” the 73-year-old Mellencamp seems to be reflecting on mortality.

“There will surely come a time when every crime and every sign of corruption will be washed away,” he begins, “and we’ll join in and share the enlightenment we find there from now until eternity.”

Mellencamp continues, “Our time will slip away, and the years and the days, like the sun will shine a ray of a little bit of brightness on our face, from now until eternity. Eternity, eternity, just waiting now for you, and for me.”

He concludes, “The weather will change, and nothing we know will stay the same, like the boat, the wheel, and the money. We won’t recognize the game from now until eternity. There’ll be a little light of gold that we all can hold, and the cost to us will mean nothing. And the angry and the sin will never be seen again, from now until eternity.”

Mellencamp’s most recent studio album, Orpheus Descending, was released in June 2023.
