Keith Whitley’s Son Shares Thoughts on Morgan Wallen Sampling His Dad’s Music for a Song With Lil Wayne

Continuing to expand his grasp on country music, Morgan Wallen released his newest album, I’m the Problem, back in May. While the album has only been on shelves for a little over two months, it has completely taken over the airwaves and landed at No. 1 on the US Top Country Albums chart. Just the latest hit album from Wallen, the record included several collaborations with stars like HARDY, Ernest, Post Malone, and Eric Church. But among all the songs featured on the album, “Miami” caught the attention of fans as the singer took inspiration from Keith Whitley, prompting the singer’s son, Jesse Keith Whitley, to share his opinion.

Wanting to honor the legacy of Whitley, Wallen decided to release a remix of the singer’s classic “Miami, My Amy” and flip it. “I got a song on my record called ‘Miami.’ It’s a Keith Whitley flip… that’s one of his bigger songs, I guess. But we flipped it and turned it into more of a rap style. But it’s cool, I like it.” On Friday, Wallen released the remix that featured both Rick Ross and Lil Wayne.

Jesse Keith Whitley Doesn’t Understand The “Deal” With Morgan Wallen’s “Miami”

Already climbing over 351,000 views, Whiskey Riff decided to reach out to Jesse to find out his thoughts on the remix. While a unique approach to the classic song, Jesse liked what Wallen produced. “I don’t think this is a bad deal at all, whatsoever. Do I think it’s barebones country, Keith Whitley country? Of course not. That’s why he said, ‘we did a flip on it.’ And I wouldn’t even consider it a flip, I would just say they grabbed this piece out of the chorus because it works… I think it’s great.”

As for the addition of Ross and Lil Wayne, Jesse saw it as an opportunity to share his father’s legacy with a new group of fans. “It’s cool as s*** to me that he’s got Lil Wayne and Rick Ross… He had to tell them, ‘Hey, look, this is a song, I got this idea from Keith Whitley’ and they probably have discovered Keith Whitley at this point, right? I don’t have a problem with it at all. I actually really like the song.”

While some fans took issue with the remix and mixing country with rap, Jesse gave “Miami” his seal of approval. And for those still on the fence, he declared, “I don’t understand what the deal is.”
