For years, Luke Bryan sat beside Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as they judged on American Idol. Having spent several seasons with the singer, the three became extremely close. And when Perry decided to exit the show to focus on her own career, both Richie and Bryan supported her decision. But recently, Perry found herself taking her career to new heights when she joined journalist Gayle King, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sanchez to be launched into space thanks to Blue Origin. And according to Bryan, he didn’t want to watch the launch out of fear it might “Blow up.”

Standing at the forefront of space tourism, Blue Origin celebrated as the women returned to Earth after only spending about 10 minutes in space. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was even there to welcome Perry and the rest of the crew back. For Perry, the moment was surreal as she kissed the ground.
While another successful launch for Blue Origin and the New Shepard launch vehicle, Bryan worried about the flight. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the country singer recalled how he hoped to stay away from the livestream. “I was doing my morning walk around the farm, which turns into checking Instagram and stuff. I saw where she was posting on her Instagram that it was happening at 8:30 Central and totally got roped into the moment.”
Luke Bryan Would Take A Trip To Space If Asked
Eventually caving to his own curiosity, Bryan tuned in to watch Perry blast off. “They’re in the Rivian, they’re heading to the capsule, and I’m sitting there walking and it roped me in. Because when you have a friend — I mean, let’s face it — it could blow up. So I wanted it to not do that.”
Although worried for Perry, Bryan insisted he would also take an offer from Blue Origin for a short trip into space. “I probably would do it just because — I mean, you gotta take that chance.”
As for Perry, once she returned to Earth, the singer posted a video of the crew celebrating the moment and looking back at their home planet. She captioned the post, “One day when you’re older, will YOU still look up in wonder? Still processing this incredible journey. Thank you @blueorigin and to my space sisters, taking up space AND making room in space for all.”
