Morgan Wallen’s incredibly successful country music career has often been marred by controversy. Most recently, the “Whiskey Glasses” crooner, 32, found himself in legal hot water after allegedly chucking a chair from the rooftop of Eric Church’s Nashville bar in April 2024. Managing to avoid jail time, Wallen fully leaned into his bad-boy image on his latest studio album, I’m the Problem. As the record currently dominates the country music charts, the reigning Entertainer of the Year sat down to discuss the most personal track.

Morgan Wallen Left This Song Deliberately Vague
Shaboozey managed to sneak in at No. 4 on this week’s Billboard Hot Country Songs chart with “Good News.” Otherwise, the top 5 is the Morgan Wallen Show. Clocking in at No. 5 is “I Got Better,” which Wallen calls “one of my most personal songs on the entire record.”
“I Got Better” opens with Wallen’s narrator reveling in just how much hasn’t changed since his relationship ended. Everything’s still pretty much the same ’round here / Neighbors still shootin’ all of next year’s deer, he sings. Boys still lose ‘less they’re playin’ at home / But I got better since you got gone.
The song sprang from an early morning songwriting session at Wallen’s farmhouse outside Nashville. HARDY, Ernest, and Charlie Handsome were just a few of the faces gathered around the breakfast table. But lest fans go searching for clues to the singer’s personal life, Wallen says that “you” doesn’t necessarily refer to a person.
“It could have been a relationship with anything in your life that was holding you back,” he recently told Billboard. “And the only thing that you did was eliminate that, and everything became clearer in your life.”

Still Breaking Records
Shattering records is nothing new for Morgan Wallen, especially when they’re his own. “I Had Some Help,” last summer’s fiery Post Malone collab, is still haunting the charts more than a year after its release.
Clocking in at No. 17, “I Had Some Help” just entered its 63rd week on the Billboard Hot 100. This bests Wallen’s previous record of 62 weeks with his 2023 song “You Proof.”
