Gilmour posted a video message on the Official Charts Company YouTube channel in which he acknowledges the album’s milestone.
“Hi. I’m David Gilmour,” he says in the brief clip. “I’d like to thank everyone who’s bought my new album, Luck and Strange, and helped to make it No. 1 in the Official Albums Chart.”
Separately, Gilmour posted a note on his social media pages about the achievement.
“Heartfelt thanks to all of you who’ve supported Luck and Strange,” the 79-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer wrote. “I feel very honoured to have another Number One album, and it’s great to see from all of the comments and messages that you’re enjoying listening to the record as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Luck and Strange is Gilmour’s fifth solo studio album, and his third consecutive to reach No. 1 in the U.K. His previous two solo album, On an Island and Rattle That Lock, were released in 2006 and 2015, respectively.
David also topped the U.K. albums chart six times as a member of Pink Floyd. Those No. 1 albums were Atom Heart Mother (1970), Wish You Were Here (1975), The Final Cut (1983), The Division Bell (1994), the live album Pulse (1995), and The Endless River (2014).
Luck and Strange’s U.S. Chart Performance
Meanwhile, Luck and Strange also bowed at No. 10 on the Billboard 200.
According to Billboard, the album amassed 32,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. during its first week of release. That total includes 30,000 in album sales and 2,000 in SEA (streaming equivalent album) units.
Luck and Strange is Gilmour’s third straight studio album to break into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. On an Island and Rattle That Lock peaked at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, on the chart.
Luck and Strange also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales and Official Vinyl Albums charts.
