Nugent was scheduled to perform at Avondale Brewing Co. on July 18, but the show was cancelled by the venue after customers and members of the community began boycotting his appearance, following the musician’s recent comments.

“There is no such thing as transgender,” wrote the 74-year-old rocker on Twitter. “You cannot change your gender. Comfortably numb is actually uncomfortably dumb. Debate me but bring your bib.”

In response to Nugent’s comments, the venue started receiving hundreds of angry messages criticizing the musician and the brewing company for welcoming him, while the local Birmingham gay bar, AI’s on 7th, said they will stop doing business with Avondale.

“Al’s will no longer purchase any beer from Avondale Brewing Company nor Good People Brewing Company,” said the bar in a statement. “Avondale will be hosting a Ted Nugent concert in July. Nugent has recently made serious transphobic comments.”

Other local bars followed and said they would stop purchasing from the brewery, according to a report, if Nugent’s show went ahead as scheduled.

In response to the outpouring within the community, the venue cancelled Nugent’s show and released a statement on their Instagram Stories.

“We have heard the concerns of the Avondale community, which is so important to us,” wrote Avondale Brewing Co., “and in conjunction with our partners have taken the necessary steps to cancel the Ted Nugent concert scheduled for July 18.”

Along with Kid Rock, Nugent was also recently critical of Bud Light for using transgender TikTok influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, to promote their beer, calling it “disrespectful” to their consumers.

“How can they possibly have a meeting around the table and come to the conclusion that they’re going to piss in the face of the people who pay their salaries?” said Nugent. “This is the epitome of cultural deprivation in an ongoing tsunami of cultural deprivation.”

Birmingham was one stop on Nugent’s 28-date Adios Mofo ’23 farewell tour, which is set to run through August 20, when it will wrap up in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
