The Fleetwood Mac Song That Lindsey Buckingham’s Replacement Was “Blowing His Voice Out Every Night” Trying to Sing

While exploring a career in music as part of groups like Split Enz and Crowded House, Neil Finn eventually found himself part of the iconic group Fleetwood Mac. Starting in 2018, the singer gained a spot in the group due to Lindsey Buckingham leaving to focus on a solo career. It also didn’t help that the band constantly struggled with internal conflict. Still, excited to perform alongside Fleetwood Mac, Finn recently shared the one song that needed to be replaced from the lineup when he joined.

Appearing on the Broken Record podcast, Finn discussed his career on the stage and his time with Fleetwood Mac. Although praising their work, the singer needed a few adjustments when he joined their ranks. “Learning somebody else’s songs and the way they put songs together is really fascinating, getting deep inside it because you think you know the way that songs work, but then when you actually learn them, you find that there’s more going on than you realized. And they’re harder to learn other people’s songs too, the little nuances that they add.”

Although able to dissect the music, Finn pointed to “Monday Morning” as one of the most difficult songs to master. He explained the song had “so much singing, and it’s really high and it’s very hard to sing. It’s because there’s no gaps in the vocal [to take a breath].” He ended up telling the band, “I don’t think I can do that one unless we drop the key quite a bit.”

Neil Finn Returns To Crowded House As Fleetwood Mac Disbanded

Finn was “blowing [his] voice out every night trying to do it,” leading to Fleetwood Mac completely dropping the song from their set. Enjoying his time with the band, Finn eventually left and returned to Crowded House. Gaining praise for his work in the music industry, the singer is considered one of the most prolific writers of great music by Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien.

As for Fleetwood Mac, the band disbanded following the death of Christine McVie in November 2022. The band would release their last studio album, Say You Will, in 2003, which featured both Stevie Nick and Lindsey Buckingham.
