“This Could Be Career Destruction”: The Song Rhett Akins (And Everyone Else) Warned Thomas Rhett Not To Release—That Went No. 1

With a career spanning over three decades, Rhett Akins gained success as both a singer and songwriter. Throughout his time on stage, he released singles like “That Ain’t My Truck” and the No. 1 hit “Don’t Get Me Started.” Knowing what it takes to make it in country music, his son, Thomas Rhett, always listened to his father’s advice. Well, almost as the country singer recently revealed the one song his father told him not to release as a single.

Discussing his career on Taste of Country Nights, Rhett was asked about his father and if there was ever a song he wanted to release that his father opposed. Not skipping a beat, he answered, “I think ‘Crash and Burn’ might have been the first one that my dad was like, ‘I just think that’s not a good idea.’” While Akins wasn’t a fan of “Crash and Burn”, he wasn’t the only one. “There was a lot of people that I trusted a lot that told me that was a terrible idea.”

Thomas Rhett Watched As Hit Song “Separated” Him “From A Lot Of Folks”

While grateful for the advice, Rhett had a feeling about the song. And thankfully, he went ahead and released it, which led to a No. 1 hit song. Besides listening to himself, Rhett insisted, “That song did something really big for me. I think it kind of separated me from a lot of folks. But there were a lot of people that were like, ‘Hey, this could be career destruction for you.”

Since Rhett released the song, he went on to record several studio albums. His last, About a Woman, hit shelves just last year. And moving past the studio, Rhett also helmed numerous tours over the last few years.

As for “Crash and Burn”, the song continued to gain praise. Released back in 2015, the song, written by Jesse Frasure and Chris Stapleton, received over 71 million views. Comments included:

“You know it’s times like this that I’m glad I ignore everyone’s teasing at my school about me listening country.”

“He is by far my favorite Country music artist & singer. This man makes me wanna dance , smile , laugh and makes me feel like life is fun & everything’s gonna be all good . All his songs are freaking awesome.  #1 folks right here Thomas Rhett you’re amazing! Thank you “

“A break up song that’s a total banger. I already loved him with his first album, but when this song came out, it solidified for me that Thomas would be my forever favorite country artist. The man can’t write or perform a bad song. Catchy and unique sound and a natural wordsmith.”
