While John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts await to see if they will become the next American Idol, the show produced several hit singers over the years. Looking back there was Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, and the latest winner ,Abi Carter. Just last year, Carter stood right where Foster, Nix, and Roberts found themselves. Knowing the stress and tension that came with each performance, the singer not only walked away the winner but has yet to slow down. But exactly what has Carter been up to since winning?

For starters, Carter decided to go a different route after winning American Idol. Taking the money she received from the show, the singer put it towards her first album. Not exploring a record deal, Carter knew she wanted to be an independent artist. She told EntertainmentNOW, “I just kind of realized that I wanted to figure out who I was and what I wanted to be. It was a good decision to kind of take a step back and give myself that chance to figure it out on my own and see, you know, who I am at my core.”
Not disclosing how much money she walked away with from American Idol, Carter admitted it was just enough to get her through her debut album, Ghosts In The Backyard. “You know, paying for producers and masters and mixers and just paying for everything around that is very expensive.”

Abi Carter Ready To Reach Her Goals After ‘American Idol’
Without a record deal, all the decisions surrounding her album landed on her. But even with all the stress, Carter believed she made the right decision. “I wanted to feel like my first steps into the music industry weren’t missteps. Honestly, it’s just hectic and chaotic all of the time. Since I’m an independent artist, all of these decisions are on me. So at the end of the day, it’s a lot of work, and it’s a lot of thought and it’s a lot of effort that goes into it, but I’m lucky to have people around me that do support me in it and that can help me reach my goals.”
Outside of the recording studio, Carter also hit the road in February for her first tour. Playing in cities like Charleston, Atlanta, and Nashville, the American Idol winner hoped to expand her stardom.
Not knowing what the future held for her career, Carter appeared to just embrace taking the stage for her first tour. “It’s been amazing. Honestly, it’s been a lifelong goal of mine to be able to sing one of my own songs that I’ve written into a crowd and have them sing the lyrics back to me. It’s happening, and so I’m just walking on cloud nine at this point.”
Releasing her first album, going on tour, and even performing at Stagecoach, Carter made sure that she wasted no time making a name for herself in the music industry.
