Whitney Houston’s Iconic 1994 South African Concert To Be Released in Theaters

Whitney Houston is coming to the big screen. On Tuesday, the late singer’s official YouTube channeled released a trailer for an upcoming concert movie, which will show Houston’s iconic 1994 performance in South Africa.

In honor of the concert’s 30th anniversary, The Concert For a New South Africa (Durban), will play in movie theaters worldwide on Oct. 23 and Oct. 27.

At the time, the concert was incredibly noteworthy. Houston was the first major Western musician to visit the newly unified nation after President Nelson Mandela’s winning election.

A celebration of unity, the Houston’s powerhouse voice and emotional delivery brought joy and inspiration to the newly liberated country.

Now, the film will allow viewers who weren’t among the 200,000 people there to see the concert in full. The digitally remastered and enhanced-audio film immortalizes a night that transcended music and became a beacon of change and celebration.

Additionally, a new live album of the same name is due out Nov. 8.

Whitney Houston’s Loved Ones Are Supportive of the Concert Film

In a statement to The Associated Press, Pat Houston spoke out in support of the project, which she executive produced.

“She loved South Africa; she loved the people, and she loved Nelson Mandela,” Houston’s sister-in-law and estate executor said. “This concert is one of the most consequential concerts of her career. On this momentous 30th anniversary, we are thrilled that we can release this film not only to her fans, but to the people of South Africa and its new generation.”

On top of that, Rickey Minor, Houston’s longtime musical director, spoke out in a statement to the outlet.

“It was my first time in South Africa, and I don’t think that I was truly prepared for how this trip would change me forever,” he said. “The energy was electric, and the audience was incredible, as we celebrated the end of apartheid. Whitney shared her love and shined her light.”
