Wyatt Flores is gearing up for the release of his debut album Welcome to the Plains. At the same time, he’s in Nashville for AmericanaFest. Additionally, he took time to post a cover of a classic Sturgill Simpson tune.

Earlier this week, Flores took to Twitter to share a video of him and his band jamming to one of Simpson’s oldest songs. “In honor of AmericanaFesst, here’s me and the band doing one of my all-time favorites. ‘I Don’t Mind’ by Sturgill Simpson,” he wrote in the post. The clip below shows Flores and the rest of his band sitting comfortably on a sectional couch while playing the song.

Wyatt Flores Covers a Vintage Sturgill Simpson Song
Long before Sturgill Simpson made it big as a solo performer, he was in a country-rock band called Sunday Valley. The band never made it big. However, they did release an album titled To the Wind and On to Heaven. This album contained the first iteration of “I Don’t Mind.”
Fans who were unaware of Sunday Valley likely first heard “I Don’t Mind” in 2020 when Simpson included it on Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1. His two Cuttin’ Grass albums featured bluegrass arrangements of songs from across Simpson’s catalog. So, the steel guitar-drenched honky tonk track became a mellow bluegrass tune in its most popular version.

It’s not surprising that “I Don’t Mind” is one of Wyatt Flores’ favorite songs. It would fit nicely in his catalog. Many of his songs touch on the topics of love and loss and this song is firmly within that wheelhouse. Lines like I’m alone in a way that I’ve never been / Since you left me behind. / If you think you can ever love me again / Please go ahead, I don’t mind encapsulate the heartbreak behind the song’s lyrics.
Fans of Flores won’t have to wait much longer to hear a collection of new songs from the Oklahoma native. His first full-length album, Welcome to the Plains, drops on October 18.
