3 Modern Country Breakup Songs That Are the Musical Equivalent of Slamming a Door

These modern country breakup songs feel like slamming a door in an ex’s face. They are full of power, grit, anger, and emotional drive. Listening to them gets us fired up as we think about our own relationships gone awry.

“Justified” by Kacey Musgraves

In this Kacey Musgraves song, she cuts the thread between herself and an ex. With fire in her heart and vitriolic lyrics at her disposal, Musgraves is ready to move on. She’s drowning in heartbreak but still atop that getaway horse, ready for somewhere new.

“If I cry just a little and then laugh in the middle / If I hate you and I love you, and then I change my mind / If I need just a little more time to deal with the fact / That you shoulda treated me right / Then I’m more than just a little justified,” the lyrics to this country breakup song read. As Musgraves points out, healing doesn’t happen in a straight line, but by the end of this track, the listener is convinced Musgraves is ready to slam the door; even if she can’t throw away the key just yet.

“Undo It” by Carrie Underwood

Throwing things back a bit, but still relatively modern, we have Carrie Underwood’s “Undo It”. Underwood is no stranger to an amped-up breakup anthem; she basically built a career on it. Her intense vocals make for the perfect emotional vehicle for heartbreak. She revs up that engine here.

“You had my heart, now I want it back / I’m starting to see everything you lack / Boy, you blew it, you put me through it,” the chorus reads. Underwood stands on the other side of the doorframe, screaming back at her ex in fury. The final chorus feels like a door slammed in your face.

“Picture To Burn” by Taylor Swift

“State the obvious, I didn’t get my perfect fantasy / I realize you love yourself more than you could ever love me / So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and crazy,” Taylor Swift’s classic track “Picture To Burn” reads. This country breakup song has been a favorite for decades. Even if we can’t relate to the exact story of getting heartbroken by a country boy who loves his truck a little too much, we can relate to wanting to shed past relationships.

Swift literally burns down shrines to her ex in this track, cutting ties with him for good. It’s a cathartic song that does what many of us can’t.
