4 Reasons Why Willie Nelson Will Probably Never Retire From Touring

Willie Nelson has been touring for decades, and it doesn’t seem like he has any interest in stopping anytime soon. Few artists keep going on performing and hitting the road past their 90s, but Nelson is still touring with his family as of 2024 at the age of 91. Will he ever retire? We don’t think so. Here are four reasons why Willie Nelson will likely never retire from touring!

1. He Made a Career Out of Being “On the Road Again”

“On The Road Again” is one of Nelson’s biggest songs of his career. It’s an ode to traveling across the beautiful United States with family and friends in tow, spreading joy through music wherever the road takes them. Nelson clearly loves it, and for all we know, he doesn’t love being in one spot for too long. If there’s ever one true reason why Willie Nelson will likely never retire, it probably comes down to the fact that he just loves it!

2. He Is Allegedly “Scared” of Retiring

This reason is all conjecture, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if it were true. Back in 2023, a “source” close to Nelson told the National Enquirer that Nelson won’t quit touring because he is afraid he will die if he does. This is an understandable fear that many people have when aging, and it doesn’t help that the myth that retiring “kills you” is still so prevalent.

Still, we do know for a fact that Nelson thinks “age is just a number”. So for all we know, this anonymous “source” isn’t telling the truth.

3. He Said He Always Plans To Quit, Yet Always Comes Back

Earlier in 2024, Nelson provided some insight into how he feels about touring in an interview with CBS News. He noted that at his age, he “probably should” consider retiring. When asked if he actually wants to retire, Nelson was frank about what usually happens when the urge to call it quits on touring for good rears its ugly head.

“Oh yeah, I quit every night,” he said. “After every tour, I say ‘this is it’. And then I get the urge again to go back.”

4. You Can’t Beat All That Family Time

The Family goes on tour with Willie Nelson virtually every time he tours, and this might be a potential reason why he won’t retire. The Family backing band is made up of a number of Nelson’s family members. The original lineup included his sister Bobbie Lee Nelson. Today, it includes a number of his friends, as well as his sons Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson.

The lineup is always changing, but there’s usually at least some actual family in the mix. Who wouldn’t love performing live with their kids? It probably keeps Nelson young, after all!
