4 Rock Stars Who Hated Their Own Songs

Most artists know what itโ€™s like to create something and then very quickly hate it. Itโ€™s simply the nature of being a creative person; even if the output is good, one always feels like one could do better. For these famous rock stars, their hit songs ended up becoming their biggest headaches. Letโ€™s look at a few rock stars who have said that they hated their own songs!

1. Kurt Cobain Hated โ€œSmells Like Teen Spiritโ€

Diehard Nirvana fans likely know this little factoid already. โ€œSmells Like Teen Spiritโ€ became Nirvanaโ€™s biggest pop/rock hit, and itโ€™s still one of the most popular grunge anthems of all time. However, frontman Kurt Cobain eventually came to hate it and even nixed the track from the live setlists.

โ€œI can barely, especially on a bad night like tonight, get through โ€˜Teen Spiritโ€™,โ€ Cobain said in a Rolling Stone interview. โ€œI literally want to throw my guitar down and walk away. I canโ€™t pretend to have a good time playing it.โ€

2. Slash Hated โ€œSweet Child Oโ€™ Mineโ€

It wouldn’t be a list of rock stars who hated their own songs without mentioning Slash. Slash quite famously hated the Guns Nโ€™ Roses hit โ€œSweet Child Oโ€™ Mineโ€. It was the band’s only no. 1 single to date, so there was no way to avoid playing it live. Still, Slash is on record saying that he at least appreciates the song now.

โ€œI hated it for years,โ€ Slash said in an interview. โ€œBut it would cause such a reaction, so Iโ€™ve finally gotten to appreciate it.โ€

3. James Hetfield Hated Metallicaโ€™s โ€œEscapeโ€

Metallicaโ€™s James Hetfield wasnโ€™t fond of โ€œEscapeโ€, even though he wrote the lyrics for the hit metal song. Though, he has said that the lyrics were written last minute and simply werenโ€™t the best he could have done. He avoided playing it for years, but eventually had to perform it live when the band performed their hit album Ride The Lightnight in full at Orion Fest in 2012.ย

4. Pete Townshend Hated The Whoโ€™s โ€œPinball Wizardโ€

Pete Townshend has no qualms with complaining about things or people he doesnโ€™t like. One object of his ire is The Whoโ€™s โ€œPinball Wizardโ€. Itโ€™s one of the bandโ€™s biggest songs and has become a bit of a cult classic. Townshend is on record saying that the song is terrible and โ€œthe most clumsy piece of writing Iโ€™ve ever done.โ€
