Music has an undeniable way of taking us back to our younger years, when life felt less stressful and more hopeful, less exhausting and more exhilarating, less arduous and more adventurous. No matter where we are when we hear these songs, we’re instantly back in our first-ever car, our best friend’s basement, or at a dance. “American Pie” by Don McLean has transcended time and genre, becoming a song that virtually everyone knows—at the very least, they know the chorus. For folks who remember when the song first came out in 1971 and became a massive hit in 1972, “American Pie” has even more layers of nostalgia and memory. These individuals can not only remember hearing “bye, bye Miss American Pie” for the first time. But many of them also remember the pivotal cultural moments McLean sings about in the song, like the death of Buddy Holly.

“Brand New Key” by Melanie

Roller skating is a young person’s game. Or maybe just the game of someone with good health insurance. For the rest of us, we haven’t laced up a pair of roller skates in years, even decades. So, hearing a song like Melanie Safka’s “Brand New Key” instantly teleports us back to a time when the biggest cause of concern for the day was 1.) how to clean up skinned knees acquired by roller skating and 2.) scrounging up some dough to get a snack after you’re done.

One of War’s most ubiquitous songs, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”, came out in the fall of 1971 before becoming a hit in 1972. Whether listening to the single version or the album version, which is three whole minutes longer, this iconic funk-rock track conjures strong images of the early 1970s. Latin and African rhythms and the hypnotic repeated lyrics make you feel transcendent and curious and maybe even a little messed up, depending on how much you partied back in the day.

“Nights In White Satin” by The Moody Blues

For many baby boomers, a song like The Moody Blues’ re-issued 1972 hit “Nights In White Satin” instantly transports them to the dance floor with their sweetheart. Back then, there were no bills or bosses or health issues to worry about. You were young, with all the time in the world, and that time was best spent locking arms with a special someone and letting the music tell your legs when to sway.
