From wrenching ballads like “All Too Well” to searing revenge anthems like “Dear John,” Taylor Swift is the queen of heartbreak. The “Karma” singer recently wrapped up a three-night stint in Gelsenkirchen, Germany as part of her billion-dollar “Eras” tour. And evidently, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was having some feelings about narrowly missing out on seeing the singer perform. The British rockers hilariously dedicated this 2016 heartbreak tune to the pop star during their own stop in Germany.

Chris Martin Jokingly Dedicates Performance to Taylor Swift “Because She Left Town”
Coldplay stopped in Düsseldorf, Germany last Saturday (July 20) as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. The night before (Friday, July 19,) Taylor Swift played the last of three shows in nearby Gelsenkirchen.
Lead singer Chris Martin had an announcement as the band readied to perform “Everglow,” off their 2015 album A Head Full of Dreams.
“Now this is for Taylor Swift because she left town,” the Coldplay vocalist said from the stage at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.
He continued, “This is for all of you who feel sad today because Taylor had to go to the next city. So we sing this love song, this heartbreak song, and send it to Taylor wherever she is today.”
In context, the lyrics provided a humorously grandiose backdrop to Swift’s departure: Like a lion you ran, a goddess you rolled / Like an eagle you circled in perfect purple / So how come things move on? How come cars don’t slow? / When it feels like the end of my world / When I should but I can’t let you go?
Remember When Taylor Swift Covered this Coldplay Song?
Coldplay struck gold in 2008 with “Viva La Vida,” the title track from their fourth album. With its references to Christianity and the French Revolution, the track became Coldplay’s first-ever No. 1 single in both the U.S. and the U.K. In 2009, “Viva La Vida” earned the band a GRAMMY Award for Song of the Year.
Plenty of artists have put their own spin on the pop-rock hit—including Taylor Swift. Below is her stripped-down version from a 2010 appearance at the BBC Radio 2 studio.
