Last night, January 9, Peter Rowan and the Sam Grisman Project took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium for a night of bluegrass. In all, the show was a collection of diverse bluegrass that featured a plethora of different musicians and songs all falling under the genre’s umbrella. Though, what made the night so special wasn’t just the music. Rather, it was also the non-stop appearances of some of bluegrass’ finest. The show as is was incredible. Although, leave it to Billy Strings to surprise the audience at the Ryman Auditorium and meet up with some of his bluegrass compadres.

In addition to Grisman, Rowan, and Strings some of the concert’s other special guests included Sam Bush, Ronnie and Rob McCoury, Tim O’Brien, Lindsay Lou, and several other guest appearances. All of the musical cameos were a delight and resulted in 10-plus musicians residing on stage at the same time for the majority of the concert. However, Billy Strings’ guest appearance seemingly garnered the most attention and praise.

Billy Strings, Sam Bush, and The Sam Grisman Project

By no means did Billy Strings take over the show, rather, he seemingly took a step back and let the musicians present take the reins. This of course came as quite the classy move from Billy Strings given that he has both the talent and star power to take over any show at will.

However, with respect to the other musicians, Billy Strings just hung out on stage left and picked away with the band. Upon his entry, Sam Grisman took to the mic to introduce a slew of different musicians. Then all of a sudden, he casually introduced Billy Strings and the band started picking.

The first song Billy Strings played alongside the band was Bob Dylan’s “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power.” In the song, Strings didn’t sing a single note but offered a beautiful supporting guitar presence that helped both the band and stunned audience members. Between showing up on stage and taking a back seat, Billy Strings helped amplify the already immaculate musicians on stage in an admirable fashion.
