Bluegrass guitar wunderkind Billy Strings took to Instagram today to announce the launch of his new line of Signature acoustics in collaboration with Martin Guitars.
The D-28 Billy Strings and the D-X2E Billy Strings debuted at NAMM today, heralding Strings' arrival as a member of an extremely rarified class (Martin Guitars does not go around handing out Signature models willy-nilly!), as only befits the young man largely responsible for bringing Bluegrass roots back to mainstream country music through such chart-topping collaborations as Post Malone's "M-E-X-I-C-O," as well as his own outstanding solo work.
In the video posted to Instagram, Strings states,
"If you think of just the word 'guitar,' I think of a Martin D-28. Some people might think of a Stratocaster or a Les Paul, but to me, it's just so American—it's like baseball or something.
"They all have this overall thing that is 'the Martin sound,' and that is the sound that has captivated bluegrass guitarists for as long as it's been around—and every other genre as well. But specifically, these Dreadnought guitars for bluegrass music—you gotta have one."
The Billy Strings Signature D-28 is inspired by Strings' own treasured 1940 D-28. The instrument is designed with burgeoning Bluegrass shredders' needs in mind—it features a unique 25" scale length for reduced string tension (bends, baby) and a custom wider nut for enhanced fretting comfort in the first position.
The D-X2E exhibits many of the same design features that make the Strings D-28 a compelling choice, but with more affordable materials and construction that allow Martin to serve up a dose of Strings-y mojo at a more accessible price point.
Says Strings regarding the D-X2E: "To have a Martin that you can actually acquire and learn how to pick on… I mean, that's like the first one I got, and it's great. It's a fully badass guitar."
