Oasis Is on Track To Hit No. 1 With This Song 31 Years After Its Release

Oasis’ breakup is the stuff of legends. Years of escalating tensions came to an explosive head moments before brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher were set to take the stage at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris. In a statement addressing the breakup, Noel wrote that he “simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” But that was the past, and these days Oasis is looking toward the future. This summer, the brothers will reunite onstage for a series of Oasis shows in the United Kingdom. And now they find themselves back on the charts.

Oasis Threatens Kendrick Lamar, Chappell Roan For No. 1 Spot

Back in 1994, Oasis released their first Christmas single, “Whatever.” Originally intended as the closing track for the band’s debut Definitely Maybe, “Whatever never actually made it onto an album

More than three decades later, Oasis re-issued “Whatever” Friday (Feb. 21) in pink and blue splatter vinyl. Just two days later, the track is going head-to-head with Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” for the top spot on the UK singles chart.

According to the Official Charts Company, “Whatever” has a slim lead over “Not Like Us.” The Drake diss track trails by just 500 units.

Previously, “Whatever” peaked at No. 3, behind Christmas mainstays “Stay Another Day” by East 17 and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

If successful, “Whatever” would give the Manchester rockers their first No. 1 hit since 2005’s “The Importance of Being Idle.”

Why Fans Are Looking “Back in Anger”

Sharing a stage for the first time in 16 years, Oasis kicks off their highly-anticipated reunion tour in July. However, some fans are not happy about what appears to be a relatively short setlist.

On Feb. 15, a fan inquired about the length of the reunion tour’s setlist. Liam Gallagher replied, “59 minutes 59 secs.”

Soon after that revelation, fans took to Reddit to express their concerns. “I hope this isn’t real I will by flying from Florida to Chicago!” one concerned concertgoer wrote. Although they went on to acknowledge, “Knowing Liam it probably isn’t.”

Another longtime fan added, “Oasis never played long shows. It was a bit of a gripe I had in the past seeing them live. But hopefully 2 hours will be it.”
