Taking part in Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission, Katy Perry approached the spacecraft alongside journalist Gayle King, bioastronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and host Lauren Sanchez. Marking the first All-female crew since the 1960s, the women took one last moment to say goodbye to their friends and family as they climbed aboard. While only lasting a little over ten minutes, the vessel quickly shot into the sky, carrying the crew to the edge of space. And thankfully, Perry and the crew officially returned with the singer kissing the ground.

While Jeff Bezos welcomed the women back to Earth, Perry stepped out of the capsule, raising a daisy flower into the air. Not able to take her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, with her, Perry decided to carry the flower as a token of their love. And wearing her own astronaut outfit, Daisy watched as the craft carried her mother into space.

Katy Perry “Wanted To Model Courage, Worthiness And Fearlessness.”
Shortly before 10:00 a.m. ET, the New Shepard capsule deployed its parachutes, safely bringing the women back to Earth. Getting out of the capsule, the women shared their experience with the press. Fighting back tears, Sanchez could barely speak. “I can’t put it into words, but we got to see the moon.” She continued, “I don’t think I can even describe it.”
As for King, she explained how the crew wanted Perry to sing one of her songs. But instead, the singer covered the iconic hit “What A Wonderful World. “We’ve been asking her to sing ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’ and she said ‘It’s not about me. I want to talk about the world’. It was really special”

Kissing the ground once her feet touched Earth again, Perry opened up about how difficult it was to accept the invitation given her title of mother. “This experience is second to being a mom.” She added, “That’s why it was hard for me to go because that’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me and also my family and daughter. I am full up from being able to get that gift of being a mom, and to go to space is incredible, and I wanted to model courage, worthiness and fearlessness.”

When asked about her decision to sing “What A Wonderful World”, Perry focused on what the flight stood for instead of her own career. “I think that it’s not about me, it’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy.”
