This time last year, Abi Carter became the first woman in over four years to win American Idol. With Sunday’s (May 11) departure of Mattie Pruitt and Gabby Samone, Breanna Nix is officially season 23’s last woman standing. The Texas stay-at-home mom is competing against Thunderstorm Artis, John Foster, Slater Nalley, and Jamal Roberts for a spot in the May 18 season finale. During Sunday’s (May 12) second Disney-themed episode, Nix sang for her life with this performance.

Nix has delivered strong performances all season, particularly shining when covering country artists like Martina McBride and even judge Carrie Underwood. Last night, she started off with Christina Aguilera’s “Reflections” from the 1998 favorite Mulan, and the performance had Underwood “fighting back tears.”
“You just look like you belong exactly where you are,” said the season 4 champion.
For her second song of the night, Nix chose “Like My Mother Does” by Lauren Alaina. She dedicated the heartfelt performance to her own mother, whom she tearfully called her “best friend.”

“Growing up, my mom was super hard on me because she always knew I was made for more,” Nix said during the episode. “It’s made me who I am today. She saw what I was capable of.”
Nix Opens Up on “Surreal” Top 5 Experience
Breanna Nix says she submitted her audition to American Idol as “kind of a joke.”
“That’s a bad word to say, but really, I thought, ‘Heck, what do I have to lose?’” she told Fort Worth Magazine. “I figured they’d say no — but why not just try?”
Now, with just two episodes remaining, Nix is one of the five contestants still with a shot at the crown. Reflecting on her experience in a social media post, she wrote, “I can’t believe the difference between the person I am now and the one who walked into that Nashville audition. What a journey this has been.”
Continuing, Nix wrote, “To be here in the Top 5 is surreal. This has been the most unforgettable experience, and to celebrate it on Mother’s Day? Even more special. Thank you guys.”
