Katy Perry’s Return to ‘American Idol’ Floated—but Not To Replace Carrie Underwood

Back in 2018, ABC decided to revive American Idol. With fans thrilled over the news, the producers brought in Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry as the judges. And for the next several seasons, the judges remained the same. That was until season 22, when Perry announced it would be her last season on American Idol. Leaving both Richie and Bryan, American Idol shocked viewers when Carrie Underwood was named the newest judge. Gaining praise for her first season as a judge, rumors of Perry’s return to the hit show have been floated, but not to replace Underwood.

When the news broke that Perry was leaving American Idol, the singer explained the reasoning behind the move. Although loving the show and her time with Richie and Bryan, she admitted, “I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat. I love the show so much but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

What Has Katy Perry Done Since ‘American Idol’

Becoming a topic of discussion for several months, Perry reiterated that her exit from the show surrounded her passion for music and performing. Spending years on American Idol, Perry wanted to stop watching performances and stand on the stage herself. “I’m just trying to make space for other things. It’s not like me ending this show means I’m going to go retire on an island, even though that would be fabulous. I’m gonna go to work.”

Since her departure, Perry crossed a few milestones. She released her newest album, 143, kicked off her The Lifetimes Tour, and even got a chance to go to space thanks to Blue Origin. Making the most out of the last year, Lorianne Palinkas over at ScreenRant suggested that Perry should return to American Idol to sit alongside Underwood.

Is It Time To Replace Lionel Richie And Luke Bryan?

Sharing her opinion, Palinkas wrote, “Katy and Carrie are very much opposites, but they would balance each other on American Idol. While Katy was known for her zany and outrageous antics on the show, Carrie is much more reserved. Katy was sometimes accused of being too much, while Carrie has been criticized for being a bit boring. However, if they sat next to each other at the judges’ table, they’d bring out the best in each other.”

But what about Richie and Bryan? Helping discover numerous top talents on American Idol, the writer insisted their time had run its course. “Lionel and Luke have been American Idol judges since 2018, but their time seems to have run its course.”

Again, while the producers have yet to make a decision or even announce a lineup change, the idea of Perry returning feels like a long shot. Plus, if Underwood opts to return, chances are Idol show-runners would prefer to let the chemistry between her, Richie, and Bryan continue to blossom.
