Josh Freese Shares 10 Possible Reasons the Foo Fighters Fired Him in Telling Social Media Post

Veteran drummer Josh Freese joined the Foo Fighters in 2023 after the death of Taylor Hawkins. Then, last week, he revealed via social media that he was no longer in the band. After two years of touring and playing other live shows with the band, they called to tell him they were going “in a different direction” with their drummer. At the time, Freese was unsure why he got the boot. However, he promised to share a list of ten possible reasons. Today, (May 19), he made good on that promise.

On Friday (May 16), Freese took to social media to announce his departure from the Foo Fighters. In the post, he noted that the band didn’t give him a reason for giving him the boot. As a result, he told his followers, “Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.” They didn’t have to wait long.

Josh Freese doesn’t appear to be taking the end of his stint with the Foo Fighters too personally. Today, he took to social media to share his “Top 10 possible reasons Freese got booted from the Foos.” The tongue-in-cheek list proves that he’s taking the situation in stride. See the list below.

  1. Once whistled “My Hero” for a week solid on tour.
  2. Could only name one Fugazi song
  3. Two words: polyrhythms
  4. Metronome-like precision behind the kits deemed “soulless”
  5. Demanded starting every rehearsal with a 20-minute cowbell sound bath
  6. Never even once tried growing a beard
  7. Didn’t show up to the studio because Mercury was in retrograde
  8. Promised Noodles, he could be the 4th guitarist
  9. Refused to perform unless he was guaranteed a Ouija board and nunchucks after every show
  10. The whole poodle thing was getting to be a bit much.

Freese has a long history and solid reputation as a drummer. He has been in the legendary punk band The Vandals since 1989 and has been a member of Devo since 1996. Additionally, he spent two years behind the kit for Guns N’ Roses and is a member of A Perfect Circle. Freese is also a celebrated session musician who has appeared on hundreds of albums from acts as diverse as Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Sublime with Rome, and Danny Elfman.
