A “Heartbroken” Scotty McCreery Sings ”Five More Minutes” After Losing Both Grandmothers Just Hours Apart

At just 17 years old, Scotty McCreery became the youngest male winner in American Idol history. Going on to establish a successful career in country music, McCreery has notched five No. 1 singles, including 2017’s “Five More Minutes.” After suffering a pair of devastating losses just hours apart, the American Idol season 10 champ struggled to maintain his composure as he performed the chart-topper.

Scotty McCarty Pays Tribute To His Grandmothers

In a heartfelt social media post, Scotty McCreery revealed that both his maternal grandmother, Janet, and paternal grandmother, Paquita, passed away Wednesday, July 9.

“My heart is absolutely broken… I think I am still in a bit of shock as I type this,” McCreery wrote on social media Thursday (July 10.)”But I’m choosing to remember the great memories we all made with both of them. There really are too many to count.”

On Instagram, the “Damn Strait” crooner, 31, shared a sweet photo of himself and wife Gabi standing with both women on their wedding day. The pair married in 2018 and are currently expecting their second child.

“From being on the farm in Elizabeth City or visiting the Outer Banks with Grandma Janet.. And then the incredible memories we made at the backyard pool in Pinehurst, all the way to visiting Puerto Rico with Grandma Paquita,” McCreery wrote. “Both of them truly taught me what love is all about. I will miss them dearly. If y’all could keep my family in your prayers I’d appreciate it.”

There’s nothing quite like the bond between grandparents and grandchildren, and Scotty McCreery comes from an especially tight-knit family. However, he opted not to cancel a Thursday (July 10) appearance at the Country Concert in Fort Loramie, Ohio. And the ACM Award winner honored his grandmothers with what is potentially his most heartbreaking performance of “Five More Minutes” yet.

Lifting his gaze to the sky, McCreery fought back tears as he sang, I wish I had me a, a pause button

McCreery penned “Five More Minutes after the 2015 death of his grandfather. The track became the first song to reach the Top 50 country chart without the backing of a record label.
