‘American Idol’ Winner Abi Carter Teases New Music With a Critical Mission

American Idol judges knew that Abi Carter had it when the 22-year-old delivered a stunning audition of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” Viewers thought so too, crowning her the season 23 winner. Carter immediately got to work, releasing her first single, “Peppermint Sky,” in July. And the singer-songwriter recently announced her next track, which has a message close to her heart.

Abi Carter Promotes Awareness of Domestic Violence With New Song Announcement

Abi Carter wears dark sunglasses in a close-up photo posted to Instagram Tuesday (Sept. 3.) “GET HELP” is spray-painted across the lenses in blocky white letters.

The picture refers to Carter’s newest song, “Some People Need Drugs.” In the next slide, the American Idol champion explains that she penned the track as a loving reminder to people who have suffered abuse—”regardless of what that has looked like in their life,” she wrote.

Carter went on to provide sobering statistics pertaining to child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault. She also supplied resources for anyone struggling with those issues.

Several abuse survivors came to the comments section to thank the “This Isn’t Over” singer for raising awareness. “This is AWESOME! I am a survivor of domestic abuse,” one Instagram user wrote. “What a great way to raise awareness! Way to go, Abi!!!!!”

Another fan wrote, “I’m a survivor- I can’t wait to hear the song. Thank you for using your voice for something so important.” Carter responded to the user, writing, “so proud of you and your strength.”

When Does ‘American Idol’ Return?

As American Idol fans celebrated Abi Carter’s victory, they also mourned a loss. Judge Katy Perry left the show after seven seasons alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

While we still don’t have a firm premiere date for season 25, we do know who is replacing Katy Perry. The network announced last month that season 4 winner Carrie Underwood will return to the show that kicked off her illustrious career. This time, Underwood will sit on the opposite side of the podium as a judge.
